Opal Telecom is the UK's largest independent telecoms network operator. With head quarters in Manchester and divisions in Warrington, London and the West Midlands, the company offers Voice services primarily to the Corporate and SME (small and medium sized enterprises) market in the UK.

Opal's strategy is for the group to lease transmission capacity and focus capital investment on the development of bespoke intelligent network solutions. The business has developed its own intelligent network (IN), interactive voice response (IVR) and internet service provider outsourcing (ISPO) platforms.

Opal Telecommunications was formed in 1995 in Manchester as a new player in the growing business communications market. From the outset Opal focused on developing advanced telecom services software, with products built for the "intelligent network", such as interactive voice response, billing and Internet computer platforms.

In 1997 a partnership was formed with Martin Dawes Telecommunications (MDT), Europe's largest independent mobile phone service provider, which led to the formation of a joint venture - Core Telecommunications - established in July 1997.Martin Dawes business communications (MDbc), the fixed line division of MDT, continued its partnership with Opal following the sale of the MDT mobile operation to BT Cellnet in March 1999. Following the success of the partnership, Opal merged with MDbc, in January 2000, to form a single company, Opal Telecom.

The Opal network and platforms have been developed in-house to deliver both simple and complex products and services. Because Opal are interconnected at multiple points on the BT network there is no single point of failure on any connection, and the DMSU is able to carry the call traffic and re-route to the most convenient, alternative delivery channel, ensuring service quality of over 99.95%.

Through interconnects with BT and with a number of other major operators Opal can deliver both UK and international traffic at competitive tariffs.
